Barcelona 1 Atletico Madrid 0
In front of a bumper crowd of over 90,000 inside the Camp Nou, Barcelona got the win they wanted against their nearest rivals in the race for the La Liga title, Atletico Madrid.
The win, courtesy of a solitary goal, from Lionel Messi, was enough to make the gap between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to eight points.
Barcelona may have only won this game by the narrowest of margins but they were by far the more dominant side.
The fact that Barcelona couldn`t add to their tally was down to a resolute Atletico Madrid defence that, before this game, had only conceded twelve goals in 27 league games.
The winning goal, when it came, was a sublime strike. Lionel Messi lined a free-kick some twenty-five yards out and curled it expertly into the top corner of the goal, leaving the Atletico Madrid keeper, Jan Oblak, only managing to get the slightest of touches to it.
The goal was the 600th of Lionel Messi`s career.
Barcelona could, and should, have added to their tally but Oblak pulled off a great save to deny Sergio Busquets and saw another effort from Messi deflected over the bar.
Luis Suarez also had a chance to score but could only direct his header wide.
As far as chances for Atletico Madrid went, the visitors only managed one shot on target all game, a looping header from Saul Niguez.
Antoine Griezmann had had scored two hat-tricks in his two previous games for Atletico Madrid, didn`t get a sniff as Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti nullified the threat the Frenchman presents.
The only negative point for Ernesto Valverde to reflect on was an injury to Andres Iniesta who was forced out of the action in the first-half.
