Atletico Madrid Close Gap on Barcelona

Atletico Madrid Close Gap on Barcelona

As the season continues, it is becoming more and more apparent that Barcelona`s main rivals for the La Liga title are, not Real Madrid, but Atletico Madrid.

Whilst our long-term rivals continue to flounder in our wake, the latest fixture seeing them beaten by our near-neighbours Espanyol, courtesy of an injury time winner, Atletico Madrid continue to go from strength-to-strength.

Last night (Wednesday) Atletico Madrid continued to keep the pressure up on Barcelona, with an impressive 4-0 demolition of Leganes.

The resounding win, in which all four goals were scored by their French striker, Antoine Griezmann, cut the gap between ourselves and Atletico Madrid to a mere four points.

The French striker, who also hit the post and had a goal disallowed is in a rich vein of form having also scored a hat-trick last weekend.

Tonight, Barcelona have the chance to re-open the gap at the top, to seven points, when they make the trip play Las Palmas.

It is a game Ernesto Valverde will be keen to take maximum points from and keep our unbeaten, this season, record going.

A seven-point gap at the top feels far more comfortable than the current four-point one.

In what could be a thrilling end to the season with Barcelona chasing honours on all fronts, there could be the occasional slip-up as the fixture schedule becomes more hectic, let`s hope any potential slip-up doesn`t happen tonight.
