Barcelona Looking to Set a Club Record this Afternoon

This afternoon Barcelona take on their close neighbours Espanyol in a La Liga fixture.

It will be the third meeting between the two sides in a little over a fortnight after the two sides met in the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona go into this fixture looking to extend their lead at the top of the La Liga table.

They also have an excellent chance of breaking a club record at the same time.

If Barcelona avoid defeat, they would stretch their unbeaten start to the La Liga season to 22 games.

That figure would represent the best run in the clubs history and would take them a step closer to reaching the national record that was set, back in 1979 / 1980 by Real Sociedad, a figure of 32 games.

Talking about the clubs` possible achievement, Ernesto Valverde remarked at his pre-match press conference,

'It's a good statistic and it's positive for us.

'It means we're on a good run, although with regards to how I feel right now it doesn't tell me anything. We'll see after tomorrow's match.'

However, Valverde, despite Espanyol being 14 places and 33 points adrift of Barcelona in La Liga, will be acutely aware that it was our rivals who inflicted a first defeat since the season started upon Barcelona in that Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg.

But lightning doesn`t strike in the same place does it?
