Barcelona 2 Espanyol 0 (2-1 on aggregate)
At the Camp Nou, Barcelona overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit to beat Espanyol, 2-0, to reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.
Before the kick-off Javier Mascherano was paraded before the Barcelona faithful before he leaves for his latest venture in the Chinese Super League.
The game also saw Philippe Coutinho make his debut for the club after his transfer window move from Liverpool for a fee of £142 million, coming on in the sixty-eighth minute.
Barcelona took the lead courtesy of a header from Luis Suarez, making it 1-0 on the night and 1-1 on aggregate.
With the game delicately balanced, Barcelona edged ahead in the tie when Lionel Messi made it 2-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.
The goal was a historic one with it being the 4,000th goal scored by Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
With Coutinho on as a substitute, the debut boy could have made it 3-0 but the attacking midfielder was denied by a fine save by Paul Lopez.
Espanyol were living a charmed life and Messi was denied a second goal when he met a cross Rakitic but saw his header thump against the post.
But, despite all the pressure, Barcelona, like their rivals Real Madrid, could have exited the competition on away goals when, in the 81st minute, Espanyol were denied a penalty when Gerard Moreno, with just the goalkeeper to beat, when down in the box under pressure from Jordi Alba, but, thankfully, the penalty appeal was waved away.
In the semi-finals Barcelona will be drawn to play either Sevilla, Valencia or real Madrid`s conquerors, Leganes.
