Barcelona 2 Sporting Lisbon 0

Barcelona 2 Sporting Lisbon 0

Having already qualified as group winners for the knockout stages of the Champions League, Barcelona finished their group D campaign with a win over Sporting Lisbon.

The Portuguese side arrived at the Camp Nou needing to win and hope that Juventus got beat away to Olmpiakos, but it wasn`t to be.

With qualification assured, Ernesto Valverde rung the changes, one of these saw Lionel Messi on the bench for the second consecutive Champions League game.

Going into this fixture, Barcelona had drawn their two previous Champions League games 0-0.

It`s fair to say that the fixture against Sporting Lisbon wasn`t one that will live long in the memory with the game being, most of the time, on the dour and scrappy side.

The deadlock was finally broken in the fifty-ninth minute when Paco Alcacer was on hand to glance a header past the Sporting Lisbon keeper.

The game was wrapped up when the former Barcelona defender, Jeremy Mathieu scored an own goal, to give Barcelona the 2-0 victory.

Afterwards, talking about what was probably a disappointing display, Ernesto Valverdo had this to say to the journalists,

'We try to do things as well as we can.

'Sometimes we play wonderfully and sometimes less so.'

The draw for the knockout stages takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday.
