Barcelona Stands Together
Any terrorist atrocity that takes place is a gut-wrenching scenario to see unfold on television.
But when it happens in your own back-yard, the horrific nature of what has occurred hits you very hard.
Yesterday, Barcelona was rocked to the core when an assailant / or assailants chose to drive a vehicle down one of the most heavily-populated tourist streets in our city.
The van careered at high-speed, down a pedestrianized road, mowing down everybody that stood in its path.
At the moment 13 people have been pronounced dead, although with the number of injured over the one hundred mark, with some critical, that figure could rise.
We don`t know the nationality of those slaughtered but, suffice to say, they and their families are in our thoughts.
Last night, the city centre was in lock-down as the Police did their utmost to catch the culprit / culprits responsible.
There was an eeriness about the city that I`d never sensed before, people taking refuge, behind locked doors, ordered to do so by the Police, fearful that an exchange of gunfire was imminent.
Today, the city is slowly returning to a sense of normality, but the mood has changed, eyes are dancing furtively, people aware that what happened last night could happen again.
In time, the events of last night will become another statistic but they`ll never be forgotten.
Barcelona stands together, remembering those who were cut down in their prime and those affected by the traumatic event.
