Real Madrid 2 Barcelona 0 (5-1 on aggregate)

Real Madrid 2 Barcelona 0 (5-1 on aggregate)

Last night, in the Bernabeu Stadium, Barcelona failed to overturn the 3-1 deficit from the first leg of the Super Cup.

Although Real Madrid were without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane`s side, it pains me to say, were better than us and the margin of defeat could have been greater.

Barcelona, looking to get an early goal to make the tie interesting, fell 4-1 behind, on aggregate, when Marco Asensio scored with an excellent effort from twenty-five yards out.

From that moment you just sensed that Barcelona were not going to win the Super Cup.

That theory was confirmed when Karim Benzema made the score 5-1 on aggregate with a goal whereby the Frenchman flicked up a cross from Marcelo and turned Samuel Umtiti to fire home.

Real Madrid knew the Super Cup was won and eased off the gas enabling Barcelona to get back into the game.

However, although Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez both hit the woodwork, Barcelona were unable to reduce the arrears and get back into the game. Messi`s attempt came after he glided past a couple of defenders before his shot crashed against the bar whilst Suarez attempt came from a header that hit the post.

Two games into the domestic campaign and Barcelona have lost both, worrying times for Ernest Valverde as the start of the new season approaches.
